John C. Tull

John C. Tull's picture
Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong and early representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and gradually has risen to the rank of Grand Master I. John has judged in more than 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene have two wonderful daughters and a French Brittany named Jaca.

An earthy, somewhat resinous, woody aroma mingles with hints of medium-dark, toasty malts and some yeastiness in this beer. Light esters can also be found, although they are subtle and non-distinct. The color is medium amber, although clouded by significant yeast that apparently did not result... Read More

Acidic aromas with lemon and orange zest and background fruit esters dominate this Belgian Specialty Ale. Some light spice, whether from yeast or other influences, is detectable underneath the more obvious aromatic layers. The complexity is very welcoming with nothing clashing in the nose. The... This beer was judged as an American IPA (21A). This beer has a caramel malt, very light citrus, and mild tropical fruit in the aroma. There are also hints of alcohol aromas as well. It’s color is golden to pale copper, very clear with an off-white head that lingers. The hops dominate the flavor... Read More

Oak Barrel Aged Flanders Red Ale by Moody Tongue Brewing Co. was judged as a Flanders Red Ale (23B). Notes of acetic acid linger on a bed of cherry fruit with hints of wood and leather. The acidity is restrained, but unmistakable. The color is a dark copper-garnet, very clear with just a faint... Read More

Huckleberry Cream Ale by Laughing Dog Brewing is a fruit “cream ale” with huckleberry and was judged as a Fruit Beer (29A). The first thing to notice in this beer is the big, fruity character. For the record, you might be asking yourself, “what is a huckleberry?” Basically, a huckleberry is a... Read More

Chocolate nib aromatics with a light roast character and hints of hazelnut fill the nose. The color is very dark, almost opaque, like a cola soft drink. Very little head is present, but a thin ring of light brown bubbles hugs the edge of the glass and persists. The flavor is very much like the... Read More
