Full Sail Brewery Tour

Full Sail Brewery Tour

Full Sail Brewing Beers

But a quaint town about an hour’s drive east rivals Portland’s Beervana badge by beating just about every other American city in craft breweries per capita.

Home to three brewpubs and less than 7,000 residents – or one brewery for every 2,345 people – tiny Hood River, Ore., was officially named “Beertown, USA” not long ago by Charlie Papazian of the Brewers Association.

Full Sail Brewing, 27 this year, is Hood River’s elder statesman. With a host of national and international awards, it is also the most recognized and largest brewer. The other breweries – a tiny brewpub ironically named Big Horse and Double Mountain, which turns three this March – could both fit inside Full Sail’s ample brew house with room to spare.

Housed in a former fruit cannery, Full Sail’s brewery and the brewpub/tasting room can be spotted from Interstate 84; it’s a stunning drive into the Columbia River Gorge to get there, as the road follows the mighty river and waterfalls tumble off cliffs looming overhead.

Surprisingly, outdoor recreation—not beer—puts Hood River on the map. It’s the windsurfing capital of the state and is also not far from Mount Hood, popular for snowboarding, hiking and other pursuits. Many of Full Sail’s 47 owner-employees – it’s the largest majority-employee-owned craft brewery in the country—are experienced outdoorsmen and women.

La Trappe Tripel
Judges Ratings
Description

A rich, brassy golden in color and sporting a slightly off-white foam, La Trappe Tripel is the hoppiest of the La Trappe range, displaying a beautiful balance of hoppy bitterness and full malt flavor. You will notice spices, fruit and hops in the nose. On the palate Tripel is slightly bitter, spicy and refreshing.

The style "Tripel" generally means a beer that is golden in color and strong. Like most Belgian or Benelux ales, it's also bottle conditioned (as are all Koningshoeven ales) which means that living yeast are in each bottle and produce the carbonation in the package. This yeast is normal and healthy, as well as rich in vitamins and minerals. If you notice a thin layer of sediment in each bottle, it's due to this yeast.

La Trappe Quadrupel

Judges Ratings
Description

Quadrupel sits at the top of the La Trappe range. At 10% alcohol by volume, it's a big deep amber beer with a rich, warming flavor. Full-bodied and mild, slightly sweet and just a hint of bitterness round out the palate. In the nose you will detect fruit, a faint, pleasant yeastiness and just a touch of resiny hops.

Although Quadrupel is delicious when consumed fresh, it can benefit from years of aging in a cool, dark place. The flavor of aged Quadrupel is reminiscent of port. We encourage aging of the smaller, capped bottles for best success.

Description

La Trappe Isid’or has been specially developed to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the only Trappist brewery in the Netherlands. The jubilee beer is named for Brother Isidorus, the first brewer of La Trappe.

La Trappe Isid’or is a mildly sweet amber beer with a caramel note. The beer is a little bitter to the taste and has a fruity finish. La Trappe Isid’or owes its special aroma to the Perle hop, which we grow ourselves. The ideal serving temperature is 10-12 degrees Celsius (50-53.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Allagash Confluence

Please allow me to unite this 2014 Allagash Confluence Ale with this gorgeous glass for today's Pint Break. As we join together to celebrate this Belgian-style ale, let's embrace its marriage of two yeast strains, leaving a strong, loving and devoted finish.

Allagash created Confluence Ale using in-house Belgian-style yeast in congruence with their own Brettanomyces strain. The two beautiful yeast strains come together to create barnyard bliss. Yee-ha!

Brewers Association top 50 breweries of 2014

The Brewers Association has released its list of the Top 50 Breweries of 2014. The BA's new definition of what comprises a craft brewery caused the most changes to the list, as D.G. Yeungling and Son, Inc. took the top spot from the longtime number one Boston Beer Company. This reflects the BA's decision to include brewers who use traditional ingredients like corn in their beers, but otherwise meet the association's criteria on size and independence. The full list can be found here.

Here is the release from the Brewers Association:

Boulder, CO •March 31, 2015—The Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers—today released its annual lists of the top 50 craft and overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 42 were craft brewing companies¹.
