"The flavor is of big, almost-in-your-face, but not overpowering delicious citrus fruit -- primarily tangerine but with a moderate lemony character and a light freshly baked bread malt character that is just enough to support the huge hop presence. There are also moderate herbal notes and a low black pepper spiciness. A long lingering tangerine and tropical (including pineapple) finish is bracingly bitter but smooth. Hints of lemon zest also add to the huge fruity hop complexity. Featuring a medium body and moderate carbonation, the beer is effervescent with continuously rising bubbles for several minutes. This beer is a citrus fruit punch with the aroma and flavor turned up to 10."

"This beer does an exceptional job of showcasing the broad palette with which hops can paint upon a beer’s canvas. While the hop intensity is high, there is never hop-derived astringency or a grassiness that can be found in some examples of this style. This beer is packed with hop flavor and does not get bogged down by malt sweetness. The bitterness comes across as a bit tame but this likely aids in drinkability. Cheers to the women of Wild Leap for setting the bar for new-school Double IPA high. This beer warrants a trip to the Wild Leap taproom while it is still fresh - if you’re within driving distance it will be worth the trip!"

"Overall, this is obviously a very fresh sample and at the peak of its prime; the spicy aspects in the flavor imparted by the dry-hopping technique should diminish a little over time and become more rounded as the beer matures. This beer reminds me of a bitter version of a New England IPA combining juicy hop flavor and aroma coupled with the firm bitterness of a West Coast IPA -- offering the best of both worlds to the true American IPA lovers."

"The flavor is an intense mixed tropical fruit with light resin, and spicy, pungent hops that take center stage initially with a light candy-like residual sweetness and bready malt following behind. High hop bitterness emerges mid-palate and lingers long through the off-dry finish, remaining smooth throughout. Light spicy alcohol and a clean fermentation profile rounds out the flavor. The medium-full body and medium-low alcohol warming help to provide structure. This wonderfully brewed hazy double IPA has an intense fresh and bright hop character with a supporting cast of bready malt, smooth hop bitterness and enough alcohol to remind you that it is indeed a DIPA. This is an extremely enjoyable beer anytime, anywhere."

"The mouthfeel is rich and creamy, but not filling. Fruity and citrusy hops continue on in the flavor department, boldly pushing any malt aside, leaving the drinker tasting pineapple and orange peel. Bitterness is present but somewhat hidden until the finish. As the beer warms further, the alcohol content becomes a little more noticeable but remains very drinkable. The finish is slightly sweet but still dry, with some light malt finally coming through. Despite its obviously large hop content, the bitterness of this beer is restrained with intense hop aromas and flavors in the spotlight and malt simply performing a supporting role. Highly drinkable and highly recommended."

"Excellent beer! The grapefruit addition is very well placed. It is prominent and easily identified as fruit yet complements the style and is melded perfectly with the American 'C' hops. As I’ve mentioned, the fullness of the body does keep it from being as drinkable as the style calls for and is really my only ding on the beer stylistically. As far as I’m concerned, a beer can be perfect without being stylistically perfect. If the beer were slightly dryer (or perhaps a touch more bitter) it would attain stylistic double IPA perfection. That’s not much to complain about and really, I’m not complaining – this is a world-class DIPA."

"This beer demonstrates balance from start to finish. The robust hop aromas feature fruit, melon and papaya with the fermentation and malt aromas supporting the hops. It pours brassy gold with a moderate haze under a luscious light beige cap with good retention. The brewer achieves big, heady hop flavors without acidity or harshness. Fruit flavors lean towards the tropical with melon around the edges. The bitterness has a light grapefruit zest note. The body, carbonation, malt and fruit soften the medium-high hop bitterness, which lingers through a long fruity tail. The beer starts great and gets better as you drink it. It crosses no boundaries and pushes no edges, but it doesn’t have to, as it's perfectly World Class just the way it is."

"A massive amount of hops is packed into this beer, and it even shows in its appearance; this beer is a murky deep orange with a big white head that clings to the sides of the glass until the very last drop, which, admittedly, was much sooner than a beer of this ABV should be. This immensely drinkable beer featured a soft, velvety smooth mouthfeel that served as a plush throne for the huge amount of hops to sit atop. Unlike most DIPAs, there's not an ounce of sweetness to the malt, but rather a light, airy, doughy presence. This beer is aptly named as it just might be the new "King" when it comes to Double IPAs. An amazing beer that's incredibly well done."

- Judge Dan Preston
